Rehabilitation of Bakini Tank in Vavuniya Begins

The rehabilitation of tanks in Vavuniya District under the national "Wari Mahima – Ape Urumaya" Tank Rehabilitation Programme, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, commenced recently on July 19.

Accordingly, the rehabilitation of the Bakini Tank in Madukanda, Vavuniya, was launched under the patronage of Upali Samarasinghe, Deputy Minister of Development, together with M. Jegadeeswaran, Member of Parliament representing the Mannar District, and Dr. S. Thilakanathan, Member of Parliament representing the Mullaitivu District.

The event was also attended by P. A. Sarathchandra, Vavuniya District Secretary; Amit Sudarshana, Chairman of the Vavuniya South Pradeshiya Sabha; B. Nishshanka Dereniyagala, Member of the Vavuniya Pradeshiya Sabha; the Provincial Director of Irrigation; and a number of other distinguished invitees.

The rehabilitation of the Bakini Tank is being carried out at a financial cost of Rs. 27 million. Once completed, the project is expected to provide direct benefits to approximately 280 families and indirect benefits to more than 600 families in the area. The rehabilitation of the tank will provide the water required to cultivate more than 480 acres of agricultural land, while also helping to address the drinking-water needs of the people in the surrounding area.
